Happy Birthday Mom & Grandma!
Ninety-six years ago, Janet McLachlan Smith was born on July 6, 1928 in her Taylorsville, Utah home. She joined the family of John Lloyd and Janet Isabella West McLachlan. As the tenth child, she had seven brothers, Jack, Scott, Steve, James, Owen, Marvin, and Ralph, and two sisters Lucile and Agnes (deceased before Janet was born). When Janet was seven years old, her mother died. On this farm, Janet learned to ride horses, herd geese, and plant tomatoes. She also learned to play a lot of games with her brothers. She married Keith Howard Smith on September 12, 1947 and had six children, Keith Lloyd, Margaret (deceased), Marvin Marion, Mack William, Janet and Robert K.
McLachlan Farm House
The William McLachlan Farmhouse is located at 4499 South 3200 West in West Valley City, Utah and was added to the National Register ofHistoric Places on February 14, 1980.
The farmhouse is significant because it is a particularly good example ofthe small “homestead” farmhouse which was atypical in Mormon settlement areas.
William McLachlan immigrated to America in 1863 aboard the ship Amazon after converting to the Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) church. He remained active in the Church all his life serving, at the time of his death, as the President of the Pioneer stake in Salt Lake City.
McLachlan was trained as a carpenter and contractor and built this home in a then, remote area “over Jordan.” When it was completed in March 1885 it became home for Maggie Naismith, his second wife, and her five children. Maggie received title to her house in 1886.
The Party will be in this barn next to the McLachlan farm house!
